Tried and tested plots

In Romance writing there are plots that are so popular, and usually so successful, that over the years they have come to acquire titles all of their own. Writers now often refer to these titles to provide a quick summary of what their book is about. So you will hear someone saying ‘It’s a secret baby plot’ and no more needs to be said.

Here are some examples of these sorts of plots:

· The Secret Baby plot

The hero and heroine have met before and been lovers in the past, but their relationship has broken up in bitterness and hostility. But when the heroine left, unknown to the hero she was pregnant with his child. Now the hero is back to find her – and will learn about his child – the ‘secret baby’.

· The Marriage of Convenience plot

The heroine (it’s usually the heroine) has a major problem, often a huge debt, that the hero can help solve. For his own reasons, he needs a wife, so he says that he will help her with her problem if she will marry him in a marriage of convenience. The marriage then turns into a real one

· The Amnesia plot

The hero and heroine were married, or lovers, but as a result of some trauma or accident she – or sometimes he – has now lost her memory of their relationship. The plot centres around finding out what that relationship was truly like and why it broke up.

There are also other ‘shorthand ways of describing to basic plots, often by referring to the hero – a Sheikh book, a Cowboy, a Greek Tycoon. These are just quick and easy ways to describe the ‘hooks’ in the plot so that they’re understood fast.
